Is meditation different from hypnosis? In what way?
At the moment I am doing a kind of guided imagery meditation, which I am comfortable with, because I’ve studied meditation and yoga for many years, but this seems a little stronger, and really takes you to “another world” of images. Could this be like hypnosis, and is it potentially dangerous, in any way?
It is very similar to hypnosis, as you enter the same mind state. However, in guided meditation you take yourself on an imaginary journey completely different from where you are. In hypnosis, you focus your mind on the situation, and train your mind to focus on aspects of what you want enhanced, and learn to minimize the aspects you don’t want to think about. Also, it embeds habits and reinforces your way of thinking, and can strengthen your will-power. Multiple-personality arises when the person imagines themselves BEING someone else while a situation is happening to them, and they begin to form a new personality within their mind, so it’s different from guided hypnosis. It’s not dangerous because your mind has barriers to the objectionable, based on your own morals. So therefore, under hypnosis or meditation, you can not be compelled to even think about something you find objectionable. If they are trying to trigger a repressed memory, or make you do something you don’t want to, your mind rejects it, and you come out of the trance after a while. So it’s not dangerous.
