I was chatting with some friends over dinner trying to explain the fundamental principles of the Alexander Technique. I talked a little about the importance teachers attach Alexander to have a free neck so the head can easily balance on top of the spine. If a person's neck is stretched, it tends to disturb that balance upside down, causing detrimental impact on the entire body. Release the tension is fundamental to release these harmful effects.

"Nirvana of the throat!" said Nancy, a friend of mine.

I had never heard it put that way before, but it nicely captures an important aspect of the Alexander Technique.

F. Matthias Alexander, the developer of the now called Alexander Technique, was certainly not the first person to speak about the importance of the neck. The Bible is full of references to the stiff-necked:

Exodus 32, verse 9, 10: The Lord said to Moses: "I see it is a stiff-necked people. Let me be that my anger may blaze forth against them and that I can break them … "

Deuteronomy 9: Verses 13 and 14 "I can see that this is a stiff-necked people. Leave me alone and I will destroy them and destroy their names under heaven … "

Jeremiah 7, verse 26: "They stiffened their necks, they have acted worse than their fathers."

There's even an explicit regard to the postural effect of being stiff-necked In Micah 2, verses 3: The Lord said, "I am planning such an accident from this clan, you will not be able to to free your neck from it. You will not be able to walk upright. "

A stiff neck actually makes it impossible to have a natural upright posture. It also creates a situation which work to support the entire body incorrectly distributed. Important functions such as breathing, blood circulation and digestion are placed under enormous strain, reducing their effectiveness.

In some translations, stiff-necked "is translated as" stubborn ", which is accurate as far as it goes, but unfortunately it takes us away from the physical quality lies in the original Hebrew: Kash-oref – Kash: hard; oref: scruff of the neck.

There are also many examples in our everyday language, suggesting an intimate relation between bodily attitudes and inner states of mind. We are talking about a "backbone creature," "has no backbone," "losing our heads "and be" level-headed. Alexander discovered the importance of State throat completely independently of all this. Working entirely on his own in the late 19th century Australia, he set out to solve a voice problem he is experiencing.

He created several mirrors, which allowed him to see themselves from different angles as he spoke. It did not take him long to notice a tendency to tighten the neck when you talk – well, to tighten the neck because he just thought the speaker. He noticed some other patterns that were into play – to pull his head back and down his neck, restricting his breathing, gripping the floor with their feet – but it turned out that his neck was the primary pattern. He realized that if he could prevent his neck from tightening. the other dysfunctional patterns dissolved.

It proved to be an extremely important to discover from his side, and not only for the beneficial effects of his voice. Any action he did – get up from a chair, walking, whatever – was done more effectively when he remembered to liberate his neck. It was useful to let his attention go to other parts of his body too, but the condition of the neck proved to be the single most important factor in creating a change for the better.

Teachers of the Alexander Technique day continue to emphasize the head and neck upper body relationship and students are often amazed at what a difference it does when they learn how to prevent harmful voltages to form their necks. Students often report feeling much lighter and freer and able to move through life with fewer physical limitations.
