How to Lose Weight Now: Does hypnosis work for weight loss?
Hypnosis conjures images of a bearded man with piercing black eyes and a mesmerizing deep voice swinging a pendulum back and forth, chanting, "You are very sleeeeepy." Hypnosis is terribly misunderstood, and the only exposure to hypnosis most people will ever have is a Las Vegas stage show. But stage hypnosis for entertainment and hypnotherapy for behavior change are completely different animals. Could "Real" hypnotherapy help you slimmer?
I've wondered the same thing even decades since I started bodybuilding.
Any seasoned coach can tell you that diet or exercise program you follow is irrelevant if you can not follow it consistently. Many of the problems such as lack of compliance, self-sabotage, inconsistency and lack of motivation is the mind problems, no body problems.
One misconception about hypnosis is the fear that you lose command of your faculty during a session or that it is a kind of "mind control." This is not true that no more than your family, friends, peers or culture has "Controlled" your mind.
The fact is, the mind may be subject to proposals (especially in the head at a very young child) and in the sense that everything is hypnosis. Reading the newspaper or watching television, is hypnosis or "mental programming" in a sense. You get "programmed" by societal norms to become one of the masses, unless you make a choice to be different and get what you want to be.
Another source of misunderstanding about hypnosis comes from stage hypnosis, which have large seen nothing to do with hypnotherapy for personal change. The stage hypnotist deliberately ferrets the most susceptible individuals in his audience – who happen to be willing participants – And then produces some hypnotic phenomenon of entertainment value.
Hypnosis used in personal change work, is simply a relaxed state of modified awareness and increased focus, where the conscious mind gets out of the way so a message from hypnotherapist to reach your subconscious more easily. Once your subconscious are told, it stimulates positive behavior, so hypnosis is simply a tool for behavior change.
Self Hypnosis (by yourself), is as simple like taking long, deep breaths, get relaxed (sometimes by means of progressive muscle relaxation techniques), so do your visualization or repeating affirmations, or even listen to your own homemade tape allegations.
Many people report great success with hypnosis, but others do not. The mixed results are likely to do with medical practice, and some of the topic. What kind of results can you expect from hypnosis? Could hypnosis help you lose weight or change your body in other ways?
How you think and your Body
I think there is a mind-body link, and it is entirely possible that the brain, central nervous system and subconscious can literally "talk" with the various cells in the body, and that this may be a factor in the cure of diseases. I think the body is a remarkable self-healing machine and its own natural pharmacy.
I think it's pretty hard to prove, but is that a legitimate science exists on this subject (it is called psychoneuroimmunology) the scientific community seem to think enough of mind-body connection, to spend time, money and resources to formally investigate. There are many interesting and plausible theories. We have also placebo effect to consider how a belief can affect biology in really fantastic ways.
That said, when it comes to hypnosis, I think you must see it with an eye of caution and interest. First and foremost, and perhaps exclusively, you should see hypnosis as a tool to change behavior. When you look at an assertion about hypnosis, you should ask yourself whether this claim is a result that can be achieved through a change in your behavior.
For example, if a person promotes hypnosis for muscle growth, it is possible that your behavior may change in a way that you get more muscle? The answer is yes. The hypnosis can help you change your eating habits and you can just push yourself harder in the gym. Therefore, muscle growth occurs as a result of behavioral changes – eating better and training harder – Rather than hypnosis itself.
It's the same with body fat reduction: Will hypnosis magically raise your metabolism from a mind body connection? Although I like to keep an open mind, I doubt and I'm not too excited about hypnosis therapists who say they will mesmerize you and your metabolism will accelerate. If it can happen, I'm not sure that it will ever be proven using the scientific method, so it may ultimately come down to your willingness to believe the allegations.
So can hypnosis help with breast augmentation? Well, maybe. An idea could bubble up from your subconscious that it is a good idea to save your money, go visit your doctor and fork over three grand for implants (intended sarcasm).
Guys, I could give the same warning about hypnosis in the enlargement of your …. uh … your size hair … yeah, hair growth, that's it … watch out for those hair hypnosis requirements. I'm not so sure I believe them (laughs).
What with weight loss ?
Even the results are not definitive, there are some clinical psychology research that has been published in peer-reviewed journals that show good results from hypnosis to weight loss. In Part 2 of this series, you will hear more about what these studies found.
Even more eye opening I think is some of the documented cases of medical hypnosis, ranging from simple pain relief from dental work to surgery without anesthesia (which is pretty freaky if you think about it). The mind affects the body.
In my opinion, hypnosis sessions or hypnosis CDs can be a valuable adjunct to a comprehensive fitness, nutrition and lifestyle for some people, if you get them from a reputable and skilled hypnotherapist.
Even better, I think the ideal type of session will include deliberate coaching and training as well as traditional hypnosis, not just a passive situation, where you listen and expect your mind to be positive "programmed".
Then again, I think that is why weight loss hypnosis CDs sell like time busters because they are often sold under the pretext that you are doing absolutely nothing. Just listen and get slim – the perfect "quick fix."
I do not think it is so simple and easy. You have to accept responsibility for change, take an active role in creating change and have a bias for action, if you really want success. You need to work on physical and mental level while not just "think positively" or rely on self-help CD's of any kind.
So while I think hypnosis can be a valuable tool at the end of the day, programming your mind for success all boils down to what you say to yourself (and see / read / Listen to), most of the time. You can not work with a hypnotherapist every day for the rest of your life, but you need to talk to yourself non-stop every day, and a repetition is a proven way to condition the mind.
The way you talk to yourself, most of the time, IS "hypnosis" if you think about it … it is self-hypnosis.
